Nanoengineering of Functional Polymeric Materials

The research group (NFPM) is a part of Nanotechnology of Polymers and Biomaterials (NPB) team that are both headed by prof. Szczepan Zapotoczny. There are above 10 staff members, above 20 PhD students and postdocs as well as numerous undergraduate students involve in the research in the NPB team consisting of several cooperating groups that share the scientific infrastructure. The most important scientific instruments within the team include: atomic force microscopes with advanced working modes, fluorescent confocal microscope, spectroscopic ellipsometer, scanning electron microscope but also state-of-the art instruments for various spectroscopies, dynamic light scattering, etc. The staff members with the background in synthesis and characterization of polymers, nanomaterials, biomaterials, photochemistry/photophysics, as well as computer modelling successfully cooperate with numerous research groups from Poland but also from e.g.: Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, China, Sweden, Spain, and realize also common projects.

The scientific activities of the NFPM group focuses on synthesis and characterization nanostructural polymeric and hybrid materials mainly for photochemical, photovoltaic and biomedical applications: (1) surface-grafted polymer brushes as advanced functional platforms; (2) conductive polymer brushes for photovoltaic applications; (3) micro- and nanoparticles/nanocapsules as carriers for controlled drug delivery and micro/nanoreactors; (4) multilayer films and capsules prepared using “layer-by-layer (LbL) approach; (5) superparamagnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications; (6) energy/electron transfer processes in confined environments.
