The Chair of European Law, at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, was established in 1994 as one of Poland’s first academic units to focus on European law (operating initially as the European Law Institute, a year later it was transformed into a Chair). The Head of Chair is Prof. dr hab. Sławomir Dudzik. The other members of the scientific team of the Chair are: Prof. dr hab. Stanisław Biernat, Prof. UJ dr hab. Nina Półtorak, dr Monika Kawczyłska, dr hab. Inga Kawka, dr Małgorzata Kożuch, dr hab. Monika Niedźwiedź, dr Aleksandra Sołtysińska. Current issues of EU law are discussed during academic meetings at the Chair which (being combined with doctoral seminaries) are held once a month. These are also attended by speakers and debaters from outside of the Chair, including from other universities and public institutions, as well as foreign visitors. The Chair of European Law organizes, on a regular basis, academic conferences on current issues of European. Its staff and doctoral students actively participate in national and international conferences. The Chair also maintains continuing contacts with many foreign universities.
The research conducted within the Chair is concerned with issues which are the subject of lively academic debates. Current themes pursued by the Chair include: theoretical and legal issues of the understanding of EU law as a legal system, multilevel constitutionalism, impact of EU law on the functioning of public administration and the national courts, systemic transformations and combating the economic crisis within the European Union, EU competition law, State aid law, regulation of infrastructural sectors in EU law, freedoms of the EU internal market, constitutional problems relating to PolandÂ’s membership in the EU. The ChairÂ’s staff and doctoral students engage in academic teaching activities, give lectures, run seminars, introductory seminars and practical classes in European Union law, for full- and part-time students of law at the Jagiellonian UniversityÂ’s Faculty of Law and Administration, and for full- and part-time students majoring in Administration, and as part of full- and part-time doctoral studies within the Faculty. The Chair has also organised courses under the Jean Monnet Programme.
