Discourse and Communication in English: Studies in Cognitive and Functional Linguistics (DISCOM-COGFUNC) is a UCM consolidated group, graded as Excellent by the Spanish ‘Agencia Estatal de Investigación’.
The research interests of the group are the following:
(i) Studies in discourse, cognition and ideology: This line of research examines socio-cultural issues in discourse, from the perspectives of Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies. Topics include: (a) stance and subjectivity in discourse domains (journalistic, political, etc.), and genres (opinion columns, political speeches, etc.); (b) stance and (de-)legitimation strategies in discourse, persuasion and manipulation.
(ii) Multimodal discourse studies: The research addresses the use of multimodality in advertising, and other discourse domains, and the discourse of cartooning.
(iii) Studies in pragmatics and intercultural communication: This research focuses on various pragmatic and intercultural issues, such as (im)politenes, disagreement strategies, etc., and on the language of computer-mediated communication.
(iv) Discourse for academic and professional studies: This research addresses various issues in discourse genres for academic and professional purposes (Academic English, Business English, Legal English, etc.).
