Laboratory of Chemical Biology

Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine
Facultad de Medicina

Our research group is an international and interdisciplinary team. Experimental techniques include solution and solid phase organic synthesis, biochemistry, proteomics and cell culture. Within the laboratory and the department, there are state-of-the-art facilities for synthesis, biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology.

Our laboratory develops and applies activity- and affinity-based protein profiling (ABPP) tools, which are aimed at the detection of active enzymes in a tissue, cell or cell lysate. Comparison of different disease states can eventually pinpoint enzymes as potential drug targets. ABPP makes use of covalent chemical probes, which are crucial in the labeling of enzymes. Our laboratory has a focus on the synthesis and application of these tools for proteases, and to lesser extent for kinases and ion channels. In general, we design, synthesize and evaluate chemical probes for these protein classes. For a more detailed description and a list of our publications, please visit the lab’s website.
