Gender and Politics is a group that develops research on political science from gender and intersectionality perspectives and on gender equality policies. Prof Emanuela Lombardo and Prof María Bustelo direct the group in the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of Madrid Complutense University. The group’s research lines include, among other issues: gender equality policies; gender mainstreaming; political intersectionality; political representation and gender; policy implementation and gender; evaluation and gender; Europeanization of gender equality policies; feminist political analysis; resistances/opposition to gender equality policies; populism and feminist politics; democratic backsliding and gender; gender equality policies in university settings (see UNIGUAL project https://www.unigual.es/en/); gender and care policies. The group has directed and participated in several European Union and Spanish research projects on gender and politics, is active in international networks, and currently includes one postdoctoral researcher and a number of doctoral researchers working on gender equality policies. It organizes periodical research seminars in which papers are presented and debate (see https://sites.google.com/site/geypogeneroypolitica/home/seminarios).
Researchers working in the group share a research office in the faculty of political science and sociology and enjoy common university infrastructures such as library facilities.
The proposed research addresses the processes of democratic backsliding or de-democratization in the European Union from gender perspectives in intersection with inequalities of class, race, ethnicity and sexuality. It welcomes researchers interested in the study of the following aspects of the question: populism and feminist politics in the European Union, including both far right populism and left populism; opposition to gender equality in Europe and anti-gender movements and political parties; European integration and disintegration from gender perspectives; theorization of the relationship between democracy, de-democratization and feminist politics; empirical analysis of current changes in the democracy and gender politics of European countries in the context of de-democratisation and opposition to gender and other inequalities; opposition to gender equality and knowledge; online misogyny against women in politics; discursive analysis/frame analysis; affect theory.
